Is Being a Plumber/Heating Tech a Good Career Choice?
I was on my way to a customer call just last week. It was quite a ways from our shop, as we will travel almost anywhere in the Pittsburgh area to help people out. So, since I would be on the road for a while, I began thinking a little bit about my own past. I pondered when & why I decided to go into the plumbing and heating business. And I thought about the amazing choice I made in going to plumbing school in the first place.
I thought about the things that I liked about the business. The need to be proactive in solving “everyday” types of problems for people is something I have always felt. If things just didn’t quite work the way they were supposed to work, I wanted to be the to fix them. I always liked to figure things out and enjoyed the satisfaction that comes from this. I also have always enjoyed the feelings of pride from helping others. Being a plumber or heating tech truly can be a fulfilling career.
Why Be a Tech?
As a tech, you are always working on something different each day. It’s never a dull moment. And you certainly get to meet a wide variety of people. Although some may not necessarily consider this a plus, I’ve always found it to be quite the opposite. Meeting and interacting with different folks of all kinds gives you a good perspective. A good perspective not only in your work, but also in life. I’m sure you’ve heard that cliché saying before, but I actually do find that it’s true. And I should know, since I’ve been doing this a long time!
You can always count on the fact that people are always going to need a plumber. And someone is always going to need to have their furnace or their AC repaired. So, your services will always be in demand. It’s easier to sleep at night, knowing I have a job in which someone will always need me.
By knowing these trades, being able to install, replace or fix things like furnaces, water heaters, toilets, faucets, garbage disposals, water piping, drain piping, radiators & baseboard heating, etc., etc., not only are you a valuable resource for others, but also for yourself! You are able to correct/repair these types of problems around your own house. Just think of the money you’ll save by having these skills and doing it yourself!
And the Bonus…
As a bonus, just think of the good feeling you’ll get when helping people. When you can turn the heat back on for a person without on an extremely cold, winter day. Or when you stop a large leak in a wall or basement. There is a great sense of satisfaction and pride in being able to help someone when they might feel like their home is in danger. As a Proudfoot tech and owner, I can attest to the fact that we have actually been hugged by some of our customers! Seeing that happiness and relief is a reward even in itself!
